Note: This is primarily a lecture class with some in-class exercises but not everyone will get to share their writing for feedback due to the seminar format.

Fortunately, whether you’re writing a thriller set in outer space or an angsty teen romance set on a Montana ranch there’s a set of basic principles that will help you consistently arrive at “the end.” In this one-day structure clinic, TV writer Alicia Carroll (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Film Independent: Project Involve & Women In Film Fellow) will help you apply the toolset of the scribe to root your story in a clearly defined genre, give it a rock-solid spine and compelling arcs that launch your pilot firmly into series.

Through inspiring lectures, fun writing exercises and Q & A, you’ll learn how to craft an irresistible spine that will never lead you astray. By the end of the class, you’ll have all the necessary tools at your disposal to put your TV series on firm footing! Topics include: Act breaks, ABC Stories, reversals, twists, arcs, weaves, cliffhangers, blows and more.

After studying with us, our alums have landed 234 staff writing positions on shows including FARGO, PERRY MASON, AMERICAN BORN CHINESE, THE BROTHERS SUN, FRASIER and DAVE and won 158 fellowships/staffing program spots at organizations including Disney, NBCU, WB, Paramount & Disruptors.

Alicia Carroll is a screenwriter and playwright. She most recently wrote on the Pitch Perfect spinoff BUMPER IN BERLIN on Peacock starring Adam Devine & Jameela Jamil, showrun by Megan Amran and Executive Produced and co-created by Elizabeth Banks. Before that, Alicia was the Story Editor for the Hitchcockian thriller THE WATCHFUL EYE for Freeform and was staffed on ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST for NBC. Previously, Alicia wrote for Crooked Media’s comedic live show and podcast, LOVETT OR LEAVE IT, as well as the Facebook Watch series, TEXT STORIES, produced by New Form. Alicia has been a speaker at TEDxBeaconStreet in Boston, was a 2019 Film Independent: Project Involve Fellow, a Women In Film: Insight Fellow, and one of IAMA Theatre's 2020 Under 30 Playwrights Lab participants.
