The Odd Couple: Creating Characters That Write Themselves
Nothing makes the creative process more fun than working with lively characters that drive your story forward. It’s even better when your hero is paired with his perfect foil. Just like a bold Cabernet makes a pungent Camembert taste better, complex protagonists bring out the spice in their antagonist neighbors. But how do you create the ideal character match? In this class, Writing Pad’s founder, Marilyn Friedman, will answer these questions and more. She’ll share strategies for crafting charismatic, three dimensional good guys and villains that your readers will love to hate. Then she’ll show you how to pit your white hats and black hats against each other to create escalating conflict. By the end of class, you’ll have written two to three scenes with characters so compelling, your story will finish itself.

About David Dean Bottrell:
David Dean Bottrell performed his acclaimed solo show, “David Dean Bottrell Makes Love: A One-Man Show” to capacity crowds last year at the Rogue Machine Theatre. The L.A. Times called the show “Hysterical” while SoCal Public radio deemed it “Hilarious and moving.” His recent acting credits include roles on “True Blood,” “Harry’s Law,” “Castle,” “Criminal Minds,” “iCarly” and “Days of Our Lives,” but he is best known for his recurring gig playing the wonderfully psychotic “Lincoln Meyer” on “Boston Legal.” He has written off-Broadway plays as well as screenplays for Fox Searchlight, MTV Films, Paramount Pictures and Disney Feature Animation including the movie “Kingdom Come.” His short film, “Available Men” (which he wrote and directed) premiered at the HBO Comedy Festival in 2007 and went on to win 17 awards on the film festival circuit. David blogs for the Huffington Post and frequently performs his original stories in the “Sit ‘N Spin” show at the Comedy Central Stage in Hollywood.
